Our Neurofeedback Home training program included an EEG machine and AVE glasses. We would connect the EEG machine into our laptop which had set programs designed specifically to met our individual needs. From the EEG machine we had 3 electrodes that we attached to our head with wax. Normally AVE glasses do not come with the Home program but we decided to add this to our package. We bought two sets of AVE glasses (The David Pal36), one for our kids and the second for us. These glasses produce stimulation by audio-visual stimuli. It’s very relaxing and enjoyable. Most cognitive and emotional disorders have low blood flow in certain areas of their brain. The AVE glasses will increase the cerebral blood flow and help alter brainwave activity. It’s to my understanding that many individuals will use this method alone to manage ADD/ADHD, depression, anxiety, anger management, etc. But when the AVE glasses is paired with neurofeedback training, it’s suppose to enhance results and lesson treatment sessions. I must say that the AVE glasses was our favorite training program in our package. In fact I still continue to use these glasses on a regular bases. However, you might want to be careful when dealing with kids. It’s very expensive and fragile ($350 or more) Our kids broke our first pair in the first 2 weeks. And our kids were age 15 and 17 at the time. I’m sure younger children would have broken these glasses by their second session if left unsupervised. So keep that in mind if you decided to go this route. I still also advised that you work with a train specialist before using AVE glasses. They will help you select a program that is best for you. We started neurofeedback training on Aug. 15 2009. We decided to do 50 sessions each (can last about 5-6 months). My husband who has ADHD had a horrible experience. His thoughts were completely scattered by the 2nd session. And after the 3rd session he could not stop grinding his teeth (like all day long). Eventually his jaw started causing him problems and he stopped after the 13th session. Our specialist told him that this was normal. Since new pathways in his brain were being established it was causing him to react this way.

As for me, my thinking was totally scattered until session 35. It would take me twice as long to accomplish anything. But after session 35, I notice my focus was right on target and I had more patience. As for Charlie’s ADHD, he said he didn’t really notice much except that he could focus longer. My husband and I notice that Charlie was becoming more fidgety, his ability to multitask was becoming worse, and his temper was beginning to escalate. Which is crazy because he is so laid back. But because part of his program required him to elevate his beta waves it caused him to become grumpy and irritable. In the end the extra time to focus wasn’t worth his nasty temper and in some ways made his ADHD worse. Again our specialist said this was normal because of the new pathways being established.

The first 10 treatments were exciting for all of us but as for the rest of the sessions, they were kinda of like “hell.” We broke one of the cables…..that’s 75$ within the first month, out of our 50 sessions for each of us we probably lost about 15-20 sessions each due to being frustrated or bad connections (with wax and electrodes), and if that’s not enough we had to wrestle the kids to get their treatments done weekly. They seemed to be totally over it. In the end Charlie’s last 10 treatment didn’t really work, because he didn’t want to focus or read. And Brittney’s last treatment sucked because she was all mad because her and Charlie had gotten into a fight. Whenever you are irritated or mad the EEG starts making this loud beeping sound which only makes you even more irritable. UGH! Basically anything can alter treatment, not getting enough sleep, diet, mood, etc. Lessons here: Don’t do the Home Program! And do your research to find a trained specialist that knows what the heck he’s doing. It’s to my understanding that pretty much anyone can do brain mapping with a class or so but an expert will be able to interrupt your brain waves and help you design a program for your disorder. I had honestly believed that if we finished these treatments we would be so proud we stuck it out and the rewards would have been worth it. Honestly I don’t know if any of us are better from this entire experience and if you ask my husband he’ll tell you it made him and Charlie worse. The brain mapping and AVE glasses were awesome but the actual treatments prove disappointing. I wish I would have had somewhere local here to get these treatments done. Plus I like to ask LOTS of questions and being face to face would have allowed me to do this. We did not get much input from our specialist except the typical “This is all normal, nothing to worry about.” I can’t tell you how many parents, friends, and family members were amazed that I made us finish this entire training program. They told me they would have quit after 10 sessions.

Last Aug 2009, our entire family decided to try neurofeedback. Our brain mapping experience was life changing. However our neurofeedback treatments were a bit disappointing. I will break this blog up in two parts, brain mapping and neurofeedback.

I explained brain mapping on “Question of the Week” from my website. So I will start with Charlie’s results. The IQ average from brain mapping are: below 90 is low, 90-105 is average, 105-115 above average, and above 115 is high. Charlie scored 143. The results from his brain mapping showed that Charlie sees in 3 dimensional (which is said to be very rare), he also uses both sides of his brain (even though he is left handed and this is also rare), he sees himself always as the victim (so totally true!), he takes things out of contexts (so true), and he is 100% ADHD without a doubt! The frontal lobes of his brain had no action or low brain frequencies while the back potion of his head ranged high in brain frequencies. His Alpha waves were extremely high attributing to his high IQ. But his Theta and Delta waves showed very low frequencies.

We always knew Charlie had ADHD but we never had something presented to us that would show and explain to us how and why. We were so excited and couldn’t wait to start neurofeedback treatments. For the first time we completely understood Charlie’s brain chemistry. I highly suggest that whether anyone decides on neurofeedback or biofeedback, you or your child should at least get brain mapped. MAKE SURE YOU DO YOUR RESEARCH!! Go to someone that is licensed and knows how to interpret your brain mapping results. From my understanding many consultants may know how to set up a reading session but most do not know how to thoroughly interpret the results. This session alone has changed our entire family for the better. It has helped me understand why I do the things I do, it has confirmed that my husband also has ADHD, and confirmed that our daughter has mild depression. Brain mapping with neurofeedback treatment can range anywhere from $3000 to $6000 per person. Most offer family packages if you decided to take the route we took. I have always said that I will not put my children on anything that I have not tried first. My husband and I stated our neurofeedback treatments 2 weeks before deciding to start Charlie and Brittany on it.

I will get into treatment on Part 2 of this blog.

Press into a square about 3/4 thick on a plate or square pan. Cut into 2-inch squares. Makes 12 bars. Keep in refrigerator for freshness.

In the book “Encyclopedia of Natural Medicine” Revised 2nd Edition by Michael Murray N.D & Joseph Pizzonno, N.D on pg. 442, it says ear infections are an important consideration for ADD/ADHD because of frequent use of antibiotics. Ear Infections are common with kids age 6 and under. The most common cause for ear infections are stopping breast feeding to soon (should be a minimum of 4 months), day care, smoking, and wood-burning stoves. Over 90% of allergies are linked with ear infections. Because children’s digestive tracts are permeable to food antigens (especially the first 3 months) try to avoid in your diet: wheat, eggs, fowl, and dairy for the first 9 months. Allergic reaction causes the blockage of Eustachian tube by two mechanisms: 1. Inflammation of the Eustachian tube or 2.) Inflammation of the nose ( because swelling of nose this causes mouth and nose to close off forcing air and secretions into the middle of the ear). Humidifiers are a great remedy for ear infection treatment. Also a high quality probiotic should also be added daily especially after antibiotics use (minimum of 1 month use).

Constant use of antibiotics kills all bacteria including good bacteria. This causes dysbiosis of GI flora which is manifested as an overgrowth of yeasts (fungus) and mold. In time this causes damage to the GI tract allowing partially digested proteins to enter the bloodstream and cross the blood-brain barrier to affect the normal development and function to the brain, thus leading to many characteristic symptoms of ADD/ADHD or autism. Persistent GI damage results in reduced nutrient, mineral, and vitamin absorption. Yeast overgrowth is the #1 ADD/ADHD mimicker.

She publish her findings in her book called “The Hidden Drug- Dietary Phosphate (Cause of Behavior Problems, Learning Difficulties and Juvenile Delinquency. Hafer argues that phosphates trigger ADD symptoms. On page 91-116 of her book, it explains in great detail how the phosphates and acids of the citric acid cycle affect a sensitive person’s metabolism. 1 tsp or 1 tbsp (depending on weight) of red wine vinegar (which contains acetic acid) can neutralize the affects of phosphates.

Tip: 1 tsp of organic red wine with 1 tsp distilled water and a tiny bit raw organic honey.

Phosphate is a common ingredient in Processed Foods (used as preservatives, emulsifiers, stabilizers, thickeners, self-rising bread, and any sodas). It is also a mineral that is vital for many life processes in our bodies. These types of phosphates should be pulled from ADD/ADHD diet!

Hafer’s claim to limit amount of phosphate/phosphorus from diet. Because we need this mineral for healthy development, it would not be wise to eliminate it entirely from our diet.

Here are examples of Natural Foods that contain phosphate that should be limited in ADD/ADHD diet: Egg yolk (the lecithin in yolks is a high source of phosphate), all dairy products, all seeds (peas, lentils, dried beans, etc), most nuts (peanuts, walnuts, almonds, etc), soya bean products, and all whole grains. Sugar intensifies the body’s response to phosphate rich foods, alcohol exacergates the excess effect of phosphate, and citric acid effect on the body’s metabolism effects the phosphates.

The World Health Organization recommends that our daily intake of 800-1000mg to be consumed dialy in a 1:1 ration with calcium. A German study revealed on an average that many individuals are consuming between two to three times this recommended daily allowance upsetting the delicate mineral balance leading to other mineral deficiencies affecting the nervous system and triggering ADD symptoms. Health professionals can agree that nearly every child with ADD/ADHD is deficient in magnesium, calcium, potassium, and zinc. Excess phosphate interferes with the absorption of these minerals.

There is no cure for phosphate sensitivity. A low-phosphate diet have shown to provide incredible results with ADD/ADHD.

A must-have book! Tamara donates 100% of the proceeds from this book and gives to children’s charities, including World Vision, Feed The Children, Operation Smile, and Toys for Tots.

On pg.205, Tamara talks about a study she came across on student motivation. It suggested that praising children for their intelligence has a negative impact on performance and leaves them poorly equipped to cope with failure. But when you commend a child for their effort, it makes them more eager to learn more. Claudia M. Mueller and Carol S.Dweck, two research psychologist at Columbia University, studied 412 fifth grader. After these children were given easy problems from an IQ test, some children were praised for being smart while others were praised for their effort. Next the children in the study were given a choice between a challenging test and an easier test. 60% of the children who had been praised for being smart chose the easy test, whereas 90% who had been praised for their effort picked the more difficult test. Later, when all the children took a difficult test, the intelligence-praised children became fustrated and lost interest. Dr.Dweck says, “When children are taught the value of concentrating, strategizing, and working hard when dealing with academic challenges, this encourages them to sustain their motivationa, perfomance, and self-esteem.”

Verrry interesting, especially since we have spent all of Charlie’s life praising his intelligence. As I have mentioned perviouly, the majority of ADD/ADHD have a high IQ, but yet their grades never reflect this. We were very excited about applying this new technique. After one day, we already notice a change in Charlie’s attitude.

A common question I’m asked is what do we eat for breakfast. Sometimes Charlie will eat raw organic oatmeal in unsweetened soy milk ( sweetened with 1/4 tsp pure stevia extract) with 2-3 scrambled eggs cooked in coconut oil. We completely stay away from sugar and butter. Sometimes he’ll sprinkle raw Himalayan salt or his favorite spices over his eggs. Lately we have been enjoying Ezekiel 4:9 Sprouted Whole Grain Original cereal for breakfast. Because the grains are sprouted it is very gentle on your digestive system and full of beneficial enzymes. It’s an organic cereal that doesn’t contain preservatives or anything artificial for that matter. It has 0 sugar and this cereal uses six sprouted grains and legumes making it a complete protein. My husband uses 1 cup of Ezekiel in unsweetened soy milk. He adds 1 full dropper of Vanilla Alcohol Free Stevia. It’s crazy delicious and sooo good for you! I prefer to mix my cereal in either unsweetened rice milk or almond milk. One bottle of liquid vanilla stevia (2 oz) will cost you $14.99. After using this product you will never consider sugar or artificial sweeteners again. Sometimes my husband will mix either raw carob, raw chocolate, organic cinnamon, or fruit (bananas, strawberries, blueberries, etc) in his cereal. Personally I do not put anything in my cereal except the stevia. The great thing about protein is how full it keeps you all day. Which is great for ADD/ADHD since they tend to get hungry quicker than most kids. Not only does protein help with focus but it helps to stabilize their blood sugar too. You should also check out Ezekiel sprouted breads. We LOVE their sesame bread! We went to our local grocery store and talked them into ordering this bread for us. You can definitely find it at your local health food stores that have a refrigerator selection. We order our cereal in bulk on www.amazon.com (Free shipping). This is a pricey cereal but well worth it. Price ranging anywhere from $5.25- $6.69 per box. You can order vanilla stevia at www.NuNaturals.com (Free shipping for orders over $35) Enthusiastically yours, Shirley Highers www.addnaturalremedy.com When the grass looks greener on the other side of the fence, it may be that they are taking better care of it.
