I have ADHD, If I’m Taking High Quality Supplements, Aren’t I Getting Everything I need? Why Eat Organic?
6. November 2008 by Shirley.
Q: I’m have ADHD and I read on your blog how important it is to maintain an organic diet. I’m a little confuse why you need to have such a strict organic diet. If I’m taking high quality supplements, aren’t I getting everything I need? Do I really need to eat organic as well? This can get pretty expense and having to purchase supplements too.
Jason
A: I love answering this question! Yes, you do need BOTH high quality supplements and organic veggies, fruits, and meats because:
1. Eating organic foods are not only high in minerals and vitamins BUT they are also FREE of pesticides, herbicides, harmful fertilizers, insecticides, or any other poisons for that matter. PLUS they are not GMO or genetically engineered or modified and do not use any growth hormones. Organic meats or livestock’s are FREE of antibiotics, steroids, and growth hormones. Since omega-3 originates in the green leaves of plants, grass, and algae; organic grass feed livestocks will be higher in omega-3 and CLA (helps fend off cancer and burns body fat).
2. ADD/ADHD do not detoxify well so when you purchase organic products, they will not have artificial sweeteners, dyes, flavors, MSG, and many other preservatives that causes negative reactions with ADHD.
3. ADD/ADHD are highly deficient especially ADHD because they burn through their vitamins quicker. Any time you are stress, emotionally burden, or are involved in strenuous mental activity; ADHD will zap through their vitamins. Eating organic helps keep the balance of your nutritional level daily. Plus ADD/ADHD usually have heavy metal toxicity because they are so deficient in their daily mineral intake. Having the proper amount of minerals that you get from both your supplements and food will help prevent this.
If money is an issue and you had to choose between organic foods or supplements, I would suggest supplements. I would then pull out the harmful foods that ADD/ADHD (all listed in my e-book: milk, high fructose corn syrup, etc). Next I would purchase products that do not have artificial dyes, sweeteners, flavors, MSG, etc. Like for example, if you purchase Sun Chips Orginial, they aren’t that bad for you. In fact they are chips ADD/ADHD can eat…However, you start buying the flavored Sun Chips (Cheddar, etc) and they next thing you know you got MSG, artifical color, preservatives, hydrodenated oils, etc…..
The lesson here, Always read the label if you can’t buy organic.
Enthusiastically yours,
Shirley Highers
